About Yoder's Meat & Cheese Company
Four generations of experience in meat cutting and raising cattle have made us who we are today. Yoder's Meat & Cheese Company has been serving the Southern Michigan/Northern Indiana area with premium quality meats and food products for 50 years. When owner Robert Yoder's grandfather Amos was 17 years old, sometime in the early 1920s, he worked as a drover on a cattle drive from Colorado to Oklahoma. Though we can't be sure, we like to think that's where the seed was planted, where our love of working with cattle to produce top-quality beef began. In any case, when Amos "Butch" Yoder returned to Shipshewana, Indiana, he continued working with beef, passing his passion on to his son Perry "Butch" Yoder, who founded Yoder's Butchering & Processing in 1960 at the SR 4 location five miles east of Goshen, IN and in 1972 purchased the present location in Shipshewana, IN, on SR 5 next to the Flea Market and Auction Barn. The entire operation was moved to Shipshewana after fire destroyed the SR 4 location in 1992.
Owner Robert "Bob" Yoder's, son of Perry, family is the fourth generation in the family owned and operated business. A stiff criteria is emphasized for the beef that are chosen including the size, weight and feed of the cattle. The beef are raised locally, then processed, packaged and retailed at one location. Bob takes a hand's-on approach and personally oversees this process. Yoder's Meat & Cheese Company is a full USDA inspected company, maintaining the highest standard of food sanitation and safety operations. We feature only choice beef sides and quarters, which are custom cut to your exact specification for your freezer. Only the tastiest and most tender meats are used, and you can rest assured that no preservatives or chemicals will be present in your purchase.
We operate on a simple basic principle of good business - give the customer premium quality meat at reasonable prices with the best service every time, and he'll not only return, but tell his friends. Yoder's is small enough to ensure quality yet large enough to serve the community. Bob and his sister Rosanna took Yoder's Meat & Cheese Company to the next level by expanding the amount of meats, cheeses, and gourmet foods and in 2004 they opened the new store (on the same property directly behind the old one) with a 10,000 square foot retail space to accommodate the business' growth. It is the wholesome, naturally aged, flavorful beef frozen, packaged and showcased in our self-serve freezer that now attracts customers from Chicago, Cleveland, Indianapolis - a 230 mile radius.
The national movement toward whole, natural foods has meant an increase in sales in recent years. In fact, as other food companies have evolved toward organic, natural products, they have looked to Yoder's for guidance and inspiration. In the past 4-5 years we have had business people from other states come to the store, and ask if they could study the process that our family has been doing for years.
Do we expect the next generation to carry on the family business? Bob's 21-year-old son expresses interest in doing so, as well as his daughters and sons-in-law, and in April of 2012, Bob's first granddaughter was born. While she probably doesn't have a cattle drive in her future, like her great-great-grandfather Amos, it's safe to say that the family's dedication to high quality, hard work and exacting standards is in her blood as well.
After all, at Yoder's Meat and Cheese Company, producing natural, wholesome goodness from the farm is what we know!
